Keeping Fathers in the Picture!

Overview

Daddy's Home is a child advocacy program working to overcome the barriers often limiting the access children have to both parents.  Although traditional views in our society (mothers and fathers included) is for the role of caretaker to be the mother's domain, research shows that children with parents who share in this role equally actually perform better in school and are 20% less likely to abuse or be abused by others.

Unfortunately, traditional roles now prevent our children from benefiting fully from the involvement of both parents (especially plaguing the  inner-city communities).  The greatest of these barriers has been the unwillingness of our society and the family court system to support co-parenting between unmarried parents.  Fathers often find their role defined by their relationship with the mother, while children often find access to their fathers limited to 10 hours a week at early ages and 4 to 8 days a month when older in age (per the standard parenting plans).

Co-Parenting Initiative

The 21st Street Foundation hopes to drive change through education on the benefits of co-parenting and the development of resources to support co-parenting; including the following.

Co-Parenting Plans: Educate parents who are interested in co-parenting but concerned about the challenges for a child having two homes, how those challenges have been overcome in countries where co-parenting has been the norm.

Co-Parenting Resources: Schedule management and video-conference tools.

How to Help

The most simple and effective way to provide your support is to help us organize, spreading word about the program and encouraging others to join our mailing lists.

If you or someone you know is a computer programmer and willing to donate your time, we are seeking assistance in the development of schedule management and video-conference tools.  Please send an email to djones@21streeet.com.

We are also seeking assistance from lawyers versed in family law to serve as advisors to both the Foundation and fathers seeking more involvement.  Please send an email to djones@21street.com.

Lastly, financial support goes a long way.  Please send donations to the following address (payable to The 21st Street Foundation).

PO Box 84555

Seattle, WA 98124.

Comments

Performance cannot improve without involvement and more involvement can only improve both the performance and commitment of a father.
